Content Process

Part of my role as a communicator and writer is the ability to translate the work I have completed in a way that walks outside viewers through the process. Below are experience descriptions describing some of the projects I have completed so far, ranging across the scope of work I am capable of as a writer.

Monthly News Summaries - TRCC

Within my internship for The Root Cause Coalition, one of my responsibilities was to create news summaries relating to monthly topics that get shared at webinars, showcased in the company newsletter, and shared with our members. News topics I was tasked to cover ranged across the social determinants of health from housing to climate change. Through research, drafting, feedback, and finalization I created several monthly summaries containing relevant, recent news and concise summaries of their contents.

Execution

The primary step in this process was to conduct extensive research on the topic at hand. For the month of March 2024, I was tasked to create a news summary of housing discrepancies and health care within the United States. I scoured scientific journals, credible news outlets, university publications, and academic sources to compile a list of current, credible, news and research on the topic at hand. After conducting extensive research, I compiled a draft document simply including links to the articles I found to be most relevant and current. I included the date and a brief explanation of what the article contained so I could reference this when pitching the articles to my supervisor. Every summary included 10-15 relevant, credible, recent news sources on the topic at hand.

Following this draft, I met with my supervisor Alex Lewin who would either approve the sources or send me back for further research.

Once I obtained approval of the sources, I would then write fuller depth summaries of the articles at hand for readers to digest without needing to explicitly read the actual source. I fleshed out the contents of the article, summarized research, and established key takeaways from each of the sources.

Once this draft was complete, I sent it over to Alex for feedback and developmental/copyediting. Alex would leave her suggestions in the form of comments and track changes, in which I would then apply her suggestions and re-write and tweak the piece and send it back for further feedback. Each monthly summary went through 3-4 rounds of editing and feedback.

In addition, I would use my document design skills to create a document that fit the branding, voice, and message of The Root Cause Coalition. I would write a brief summary of what the news summary was for, and a description of the social determinant we were highlighting for the month and how it played into American health.

The Outcome

The informative and extensive summaries I completed would get featured on The Root Cause Coalition’s website linked below. It was also sent out in our weekly e-newsletter to our 4,500+ members and subscribers. Finally, it was a featured piece during the March Housing and Health webinar for our members to reference.

Education is one of the three areas of focus for The Root Cause Coalition. My work through these summaries provided concise, current summaries of recent news to our members, allowing for clear communication and education for our members to fulfill our promise to research, educate, and advocate about health disparities across the US.
